In 1881 Leopold Kronecker defined what he called a domain of rationality, which is a field of rational fractions in modern terms.
Kronecker's notion did not cover the field of all algebraic numbers (which is a field in Dedekind's sense),
but on the other hand was more abstract than Dedekind's in that it made no specific assumption on the nature of the elements of a field. Kronecker interpreted a field such as Q(π) abstractly as the rational function field Q(X).
