Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani on July 13 became the first player in the 88-year history of the All-Star Game to start as both a hitter and pitcher.
Ohtani, who was listed in the lineup as a designated hitter, batted leadoff for the American League and then took the mound as the starting pitcher in the game at Coors Field in Denver, adding yet another first in his young MLB career.
He grounded out in his first at-bat, then took the mound for the bottom half and set the National League down in order, retiring the three batters he faced on a flyout and two groundouts. He grounded out again on his second plate visit.

Rescue workers dug through sludge and debris July 5 looking for more than 20 people who may be trapped after a torrent of mud, trees and rocks ripped with a roar through Atami, a seaside resort town in Shizuoka Prefecture, killing at least four people.
Atami Mayor Sakae Saito said 24 people were still unreachable early July 6. A majority of people on a list of 60 registered residents who were unaccounted for have contacted officials to let them know they are safe. Officials were double-checking the number because many of the apartments and houses in Atami are second homes or vacation rentals.
Initially, 147 people were unreachable, but officials confirmed many safely evacuated or were not at home. In addition to the four people found dead, officials said 25 people have been rescued.
The landslide occurred July 3 after days of heavy rain in Atami, which like many seaside towns is built into a steep hillside. It tore through the Izusan neighborhood, known for its hot springs, a shrine and shopping streets.
The disaster is an added trial as authorities prepare for the Tokyo Games, due to start in less than three weeks, while Japan is still in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, with cases steadily climbing in the capital. (AP)

Japan opened large-scale coronavirus vaccination centers in Tokyo and Osaka on May 24 in a bid to accelerate the country’s inoculation program, which has lagged behind other developed countries and fueled concerns about the plan to hold the Olympics in the capital in July and August.
The centers, run by the Self-Defense Forces, will operate for three months from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., including weekends and national holidays. They will use the vaccine developed by U.S. pharmaceutical firm Moderna Inc. that was approved by the government May 21.
Japan hopes the mass venues, aiming to inoculate up to 10,000 people a day in Tokyo and 5,000 in Osaka, will help meet its target of completing vaccinations by the end of July of people aged 65 or older, or who will turn 65 in the current fiscal year. The Tokyo Olympics will start on July 23.
The slots were quickly filled after the Defense Ministry started accepting reservations on May 17 on its website and via the Line messaging app.

Establishments serving alcohol or offering karaoke services in the six prefectures under the emergency are asked to suspend their business during the period, with the government providing money for compliance. Those not serving liquor are asked to close at 8 p.m.
A quasi-state of emergency, which has fewer restrictions on businesses than the state of emergency, was imposed on parts of five prefectures: Hokkaido, Ishikawa, Kyoto, Hyogo and Fukuoka.

“The first person I have to thank is the writer of the original work, Haruki Murakami,” Hamaguchi, 42, said in his acceptance speech. “I believe (the screenplay) was commended because those who played in the film did a great job.”
In March, Hamaguchi took home the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin film festival for his film Guzen to sozo (Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy), a collection of three short stories.
The 74th Cannes film festival, which was canceled last year, was held from July 6 to 17 after being postponed from May due to the coronavirus pandemic.

ワイドショーのコメンテーターについてはこれまでも疑問視する声は少なくなかったが、薬物治療の専門家ではない素人が公共の場で依存症を語るのは極めて危険なことだ。
お馴染みの自粛も
こういった報道だけでなく、もはやお馴染みとなった放送・公開の自粛も行われている。今年7月に田代氏が出演したNHKの「バリバラ」の動画は公式サイトやYoutube上で公開されていたが、逮捕を受けて非公開にされてしまった。
企業イメージを大切にするスポンサーのついた番組ならともかく、NHKは公共放送だ。さらに田代氏が出演する番組は薬物依存の実態について語ったもので、薬物の危険性や適切な治療の必要性について語ったものだった。
一方では容疑の段階でバッシングを行い、もう一方では“なかったことにする”という報道の仕方には、薬物依存への対策という観点からも、報道のあり方という観点からも疑問を抱かずにはいられない。

7月28日、栃木県宇都宮市内で、「クルマ2台に衝突する事故を起こした男が、裸でクルマの屋根に上に乗って奇声を上げている」という通報。この男は警官に取り押さえられた後に意識を失い、死亡した。覚せい剤を使用していた可能性があり、急性中毒の疑いがあるという。
栃木県警・宇都宮東署によると、事件が起きたのは7月28日の午前9時ごろ、宇都宮市海道町付近の県道を走行していたクルマの運転者から前記の通報が寄せられた。
約20分後、現場に掛けつけた同署員が男を発見し、道路交通法違反の現行犯で逮捕しようとしたところ、男は大声で叫び、手足をばたつかせながら抵抗。複数の警官で取り押さえた直後、痙攣を繰り返しながら呼吸停止に陥り、そのまま意識を失った。男は心肺停止の状態で近くの病院に収容されたが、約1時間後に死亡した。所持品から、死亡したのはさくら市内に在住する30歳の男とみられている。
男は宿泊していた同市内のホテルで、消火器を噴射するなどした後に自らのクルマで逃走。衝突を繰り返しながら現場に到達したとみられる。ホテルの部屋からは覚せい剤が発見されており、警察では急性中毒の疑いもあるとして、司法解剖を行って死因を特定する方針だ。

歯医者では、治療のために強いライトが当たることや医者の顔が近づくことへの配慮で、タオルやガーゼで目隠しをされるのが一般的だ。
しかし、患者が「見えない」ことにつけこんでキスをする歯医者がいたとしたら……。
6月30日に宇都宮地裁で、タオルで目を覆った20代の被害女性A子さんに治療中にキスをしたとして準強制わいせつ罪に問われていた栃木県壬生町の歯科医・武田博也被告（40）は懲役1年2カ月（求刑懲役2年）の実刑判決を言い渡された。
宇都宮市内の歯科クリニックに勤務していた武田被告が栃木県警に逮捕されたのは、約1年半前の2019年11月。「キスはしていない、まったく身に覚えがない」と否認し、公判でも一貫して無罪主張を続けた。

狙いは高価な日本製？ トラクター盗難多発、施錠しても被害 栃木県内
宇都宮東署や宇都宮南署によると、女は商業施設や病院の待合室に１人でいる高齢女性に対し「洋服の後ろが汚れていますよ」と丁寧な口調で声を掛け、汚れを落とすのを手伝おうとトイレの個室へ一緒に入り、隙を見てかばんから財布を抜き取っているという。
女は被害女性が気付かないうちに、服に汚れを付けているとみられる。宇都宮市内の商業施設や病院で今月22日までに、少なくとも４件の発生が確認されている。県警は被害者が財布を盗まれたことに気が付いていない事件もあるとみており、「被害に遭わないよう家族にも声を掛けてほしい」と訴えている。

男性職員は６月13日、埼玉県内のビジネスホテルで女子児童の体を触るなどわいせつな行為をしたとして同17日に逮捕され、今月７日に起訴された。職員は休職処分となっていた。
県人事課によると、男性職員は「被害者やご家族、県など迷惑を掛けた全ての方に一生を掛けて償いたい」などと話しているという。
管理監督責任があるとして課長級の所属長男性（55）も文書訓戒処分とした。同課は「公務員として、してはいけない行為であり、県民に深くおわびする。引き続き注意喚起し、綱紀の保持徹底に取り組みたい」としている。
