伝統文法なら補語扱いはいうまでもないでしょ。
OXFORD Guide to English Grammar 1994 でも補語と解説。
There is a special pattern where a complement occurs with an action verb, not a linking verb.

We arrived exhausted. / He walked away a free man. / I came home really tired one evening.

これらの例を主格補語と理解するのは間違っていないと思う。

[1] We arrived [exhausted].
[2] He walked away [a free man].
[3] I came home [really tired] one evening.

しかし、次のような分詞構文の場合は違うというのが、ここでの論争。

[4] Edith came [running].
[5] Edith came [running towards us].
[6] Rodin sat [thinking].
[7] Rodin sat [thinking about his life].
