For me, the real masterpiece performance of Toscanini's 1939 Beethoven Cycle is his "Eroica". It is uniquely Toscanini and exquisite in every respect. There are plenty of other great "Eroica's", but this one, IMHO, should be on everybody's top 5 list.
The new edition here sounds like he is right in front of you, and we can even hear his humming as he conducts. As is the case with all of our recent posts, this is the final edition we will offer of this recording on YouTube, which cannot reproduce them at full resolution.
Toscanini's 1939 "Eroica" is one of the most popular classical recordings of the WWII era, and one which has received overwhelming acclaim over the course of nearly a century.
It is also one of the fastest recordings of it, too. Although it is quick, and even sometimes frenzied, it is as pure as a Beethoven Symphonic performance can be in intensity and substance. There are other great performances which are very different, but this is essential repertoire for any lover of Beethoven.
The NBC Symphony rises to the occasion with playing that approaches perfection, and the dry acoustics make the music come across with naked tone that literally wants to jump into our laps and make us feel it.
Audiences of this time found themselves in the middle of an ongoing debate between Toscanini and Furtwängler over the meanings of it all. Like two parents who could both make their points convincingly and force us to choose...or reject all side taking and simply love them both.
We choose the latter.
The present edition is a replacement of an earlier post and is taken from the original source transcriptions with new, more accurate, mastering. This is from the 2013 edition on M&A and it is a must-have. No noise reduction has been used and only the slightest touch of EQ has been used to restore acoustic flat.
