The first major step towards a proof of the Geometrization Conjecture was Thurston’s
‘Monster Theorem’ from the late 1970s, namely the proof of the Geometrization Theorem for Haken manifolds. As we hinted at in the previous section, the proof uses
an induction argument on hierarchies. But along the way Thurston also introduced a
wealth of new concepts and ideas, many of which developed into major fields of study
in their own right. William Thurston was awarded the Fields medal in 1983^8, but it
took about 20 years and the efforts of many authors for all details to be written down
rigorously. It is worth reading Thurston’s interesting argument [Th1994] why he did
not provide the detailed proof himself.
The full proof of the Geometrization Conjecture was finally given by Perelman
[Pe2002, Pe2003a, Pe2003b] in 2003 using the Ricci flow on Riemannian metrics,
building on ideas pioneered by Richard Hamilton [Ha1982].
