”In conclusion, I would like to say how pleased and grateful I am to have been invited to participate in this homage to the genius of Evariste Galois on his bicentennial.
Without wanting in any way to disparage my own book on Galois theory, published in 1984, I will say that the part of my book that was its greatest contribution,
and to which I refer most often myself, is the English translation of Galois's Premier Memoire that is in Appendix 1.
As I have tried to explain in this talk, Galois's own exposition offers in many ways the most insightful one of what we call,
and future generations will certainly continue to call, Galois theory.”

In this paper, I have tried to explain the First Memoir to modern readers, going through it proposition by proposition.
The most important proposition, and the one I most emphasize, is Proposition 2, the one about which Galois wrote in the margin,
“There is something to be completed in this proof. I do not have the time”
(the sections “Proposition 2” and “Proposed Revision of Proposition 2” below).
My interpretation suggests how Galois might have stated and proved it given a little more time.
