が、「理工科学校は最も高等な数学が教えられ、さらに自由主義的な雰囲気に満ちていた」とあるので

エヴァリスト・ガロア

エヴァリスト・ガロア（Evariste Galois, 1811年10月25日 - 1832年5月31日）は、フランスの数学者および革命家である。フランス語の原音に忠実に「ガロワ」と表記されることもある。
1828年に理工科学校（Ecole Polytechnique）の試験に挑戦したが、失敗している。
（1829年）彼は再び理工科学校への受験に挑戦したが失敗した。伝説によれば、この時の口述試験の担当者が対数に関する愚問をしつこく出し、ガロアの回答に満足しなかったために、頭に来たガロアがその試験官に向かって黒板消しを投げつけたという[6]。
理工科学校は最も高等な数学が教えられ、さらに自由主義的な雰囲気に満ちていたためにガロアは入学を切望していたが、その入学試験は2回までと制限されていたため、ガロアの望みは絶たれてしまった。
