As far as I recall it, the article in question was a mere essay on old events by a film maker.
There wasn't any new fact revealed, nor the person was "very important."

I do think editorials are basically not a news.
Some editorials can happen to contain really novel something and have novelty, "newsness."
I recognise apparently-contradicting two regulations
"ニュース性のある社説スレはOK" and "社説関連は「社説板」へ" as such.
