Sony Unveils First “VR180” Lens for E-Mount — Opening a New Frontier in Immersive Imaging

Sony Corporation today announced its first VR180-dedicated lens for the E-mount camera system. Against the backdrop of the rapidly expanding VR market and the growing demand for next-generation content, this new lens aims to provide creators with an accessible way to produce “immersive experiences” in addition to traditional photography and video.

The lens adopts a dual-fisheye optical design, enabling simultaneous capture of a full 180-degree field of view for both eyes. This makes it possible to enjoy natural stereoscopic vision and high-definition immersion on VR devices such as the Meta Quest series and PlayStation VR2. In addition, Sony’s proprietary optical correction algorithms minimize distortion and parallax adjustments, significantly reducing the motion sickness that has often been a challenge in VR filming.

The lens is expected to see use not only among visual creators, but also in fields such as education, tourism, and healthcare. For example, it will make it easier to produce experiential content such as virtual school trips or remote medical training, delivering the “atmosphere” of a location as if being there in person.

A spokesperson from Sony Imaging Products & Solutions commented:
“With the versatility of pairing with a wide range of E-mount camera bodies, we aim to bring new creative freedom to both high-end professionals and entry-level users.”

The lens is scheduled for release next spring, with pricing and detailed specifications to be announced later. Sony’s full-fledged entry into the VR market is already drawing strong interest from creators around the world.
