78: [sage] 2020/09/18(金) 11:11:24 ID:jXtmpBPa There are a considerable number of factors involved in successful language learning, and they often differ depending upon who is learning which language. The difficulties encountered by native speakers of, say, Russian who are studying Chinese, are bound to be quite distinct in many ways from those faced by an Italian speakerlearning French. One of the most thoroughly researched language-learning frontiers in the world must be that of Japanese students of English. And one of the reasons for this is that crossing that language border seems to be particularly hard for Japanese learners. When asked for advice about a key to language learning, I often recall an experience I had in Oxford in 1988. Until that time I had never been to any English-speaking country, and for several months following my arrival I was afraid to speak English. Fearful of making grammatical mistakes or mispronouncing words, I lacked the confidence to speak up in company. I usually needed yo spend a moment collecting my thoughts before jumping into a conversation. Not only did such an attitude make me nervous, but I regularly found that by the time I was ready to join in, the subject had already been changed. Naturally, I came to feel discouraged, but I had no clue how to get myself out of this terrible situation. One day a friend of mine began to question me about Japanese culture and society. Since I was happy to tell her about my homeland, which I missed so much, I talked at length about its beautiful countryside, its long history and its rich culture. Suddenly she interrupted me and said, “Ayami, you speak very good English! Why are you usually so quiet? You've got to take the initiative more when you talk to people.” This is one of the most useful pieces of advice regarding studying a foreign language that I have ever received. What matters most is not speaking without mistakes, but speaking with enthusiasm about a subject with which we are familiar. http://mevius.5ch.net/test/read.cgi/bookall/1600241401/78
