While many researchers see reconstruction of the entire neural network of a human brain as the ultimate goal of connectomics,
that goal is still out of reach ? perhaps several decades away ? for several reasons: postmortem brain tissue is not currently sufficiently preserved to allow full circuit reconstruction;
EM staining for a volume the size of the human brain is unattainable with known technologies;
and EM scans of an entire human brain would require approximately one zettabyte of digital storage (1021 bytes, or 1 billion terabytes)
? roughly the total amount of Internet traffic worldwide in one year!?
