Another area in which great advances are occurring is stem cell biology, notably the
development of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells) from healthy individuals and patients
that can be differentiated into mature neurons. By providing insight into the essential features
of the brain, such as its constituent neurons, their connections, and their patterns of activity in
health and disease, the BRAIN Initiative will provide a standard for evaluating the competence
of iPS‐derived neurons to form functional circuits, and a stimulus for improving them to the
point that they can be considered as therapeutic tools.
