I'm really interested in the idiom "cat meat," which has two meanings. One is meat from a cat that is eaten. The other is meat prepared to be fed to a cat, and this second meaning is also used as a metaphor for someone who has been badly beaten.
The metaphor likely came from the fact that, in the past, cheap meat for cats was made softer by hitting it again and again.

To some posters on the website
I believe the purpose of teaching one's native language is to enable people to read newspapers. This means they can access information from the media and make informed decisions when choosing political parties or politicians. This ability is essential in democratic societies, where democracy largely relies on citizens being informed through the media.
Therefore, instead of reading books about how to interpret English sentences, it would be more useful to read freely accessible newspapers like The Guardian.

ある文法書の中で、下の(1)の文に対して(2)のパラフレーズが与えられていました。
(1) Late frosts came, completely ruining the crops.
(遅霜 [春の霜] が降り、作物が台無しになった。)
(2) Late frosts came, and it completely ruined the crops.
(2)ではitが動詞ruinedの主語になっていますが、このitが先行する主節の主語であるlate frostsを指すとは考えられません。単数形のitが複数形のlate frostsを指すことはありえないからです。(2)の文のitは先行する文の「遅霜 [春の霜] が降りた」という内容を指していると思います。今まで分詞構文の分詞の意味上の主語は主節の主語に限られていると思っていたのですが、先行する主節の内容が分詞の主語になってもいいのでしょうか。

Swanは、(3)の例文をあげるだけで、文法的な解説は何もしていませんが、分詞ruiningの意味上の主語は、「雨が2週間降り続いた」という先行する文の内容です。
また、Marcella Frankは、上記のSwanの著作が出版される8年前に、文法書の中で次のように述べています(Frank 1972, p.313)。
