In just the past few months, Donald Trump has taken a wrecking ball to the US-led
post-war order and many of America's most important alliances.
But it is worth remembering that Trump is merely a symptom of a much larger
historical realignment that will continue long after he is gone.

Insofar that Trump’s policies pose serious risks, it is not because they represent a
strategic reorientation for the US, which was happening anyway, but rather because
they are self-contradictory and unnecessarily destructive. For example, when
Trump calls for a reduction in US military involvement in the Middle East, he is merely
echoing Obama.
トランプ大統領の外交政策は深刻なリスクを含み、それは米国の戦略的リポジションで
あるからではなく、自己矛盾の多い不必要に破壊的であるためである。例えばトランプ
大統領は中東の軍事的関与を減らすことでオバマ政権の政策をエコーしている。その一

Yet by reneging on the nuclear deal with Iran, Trump has made war in the region more
likely. And by going out of his way to alleviate North Korea’s international isolation,
while getting almost nothing in return, he has strengthened China’s position in East Asia.
また殆んど何の見返りもなく北朝鮮の国際的孤立を軽減し中国の東アジアにおける立場を
強化した。
Trump’s global trade war is equally self-defeating. By slapping tariffs on America’s closest
allies, he is practically driving them into China’s arms. If European and Japanese exporters
are facing protectionist barriers in the US, what other option do they have than tapping
the Chinese market? Despite Russian President Vladimir Putin’s militarism in Eastern
Ukraine and efforts to influence the outcome of Western elections, a Europe without its
North Atlantic backstop has no choice but to turn toward Eurasia.
