Title: The Life of Old Deer Man
A frail 70-year-old man, Gigi Deer, sat alone in his dilapidated wooden apartment. The peeling wallpaper and faint smell of mold bore silent witness to a life spent on the margins of society. But in his mind, a different world unfolded: a quaint two-story house with a blooming garden where deer from the woods would occasionally visit and a loyal cat would purr softly in his lap. These vivid illusions were his refuge from the harsh disappointments and unbearable realities of his life.
Born in postwar Japan, Gigi once had a promising future. His parents, both factory workers, dreamed of a brighter life for their only son, pouring everything they had into his education. However, those dreams unraveled when he failed the entrance exam for the prestigious university he aspired to attend. Instead, he enrolled in a third-rate university, where he found himself adrift in a sea of mediocrity and disillusionment.
During his college years, Gigi encountered Marxist ideology. Captivated by its ideals of equality and revolution, he threw himself into the student movement, attending demonstrations and protests with fervor. But his passion came at a cost. Neglecting his studies, he ultimately dropped out, a decision that severed his ties with his conservative parents. His father’s final words still echoed in his mind: “You’re not my son anymore. You’re no longer my son.” When his parents passed away years later, he learned of it only after the fact.
Without an education or family support, Gigi drifted from one low-paying job to another. Socially awkward and struggling to adapt to the demands of the workplace, he faced repeated layoffs. Each dismissal brought fresh waves of shame and frustration. To cope, he turned to cheap, high-calorie meals, numbing his pain with food. This unhealthy lifestyle took a toll on his body, and in his 50s, he was diagnosed with diabetes.
Over the years, Gigi’s isolation deepened. Human interaction became an unbearable burden, and he retreated further into his fantasies. In his mind, he was no longer a lonely old man but a respected figure surrounded by nature’s beauty, comforted by the imagined presence of a purring cat.
Still, reality weighed heavily on him. His meager pension barely covered rent and medical expenses. Occasional visits to the clinic served as grim reminders of his declining health, while memories of lost relationships haunted the silence of his apartment.
